When Microsoft needed to add Internet support to Windows, they used the IP stack from BSD, the original open source unix.
When Apple needed a new Operating System, they merged two open source projects, Mach and FreeBSD, to form its foundation. Then they turned around and released that as an open source project itself, Darwin.
And IBM, well, by now you must have heard, they’re betting the company on Linux.
