This little tale from RISKS describes the process by which a bug was discovered, traced, and (yes, finally) fixed.

It’s especially interesting because at several points in the story a Band-Aid approach would have gotten the users on their way, but the developers insisted on a root-cause analysis and a reasoned, logical approach to fixing the bug correctly.

The story is probably all too familiar to long-time Linux users, though we can take solace in the facts that bugs are getting fixed the right way, and that interested parties can examine and fix the bugs that are there.
