Trouble with New Kernels on Fedora?

So maybe you’ve allowed yum to update your kernel on Fedora Core (3 at least) and now your machine doens’t boot. It can’t find the root volume or something.

The trouble is a bug in the mkinitrd package. This has been fixed, but the new kernels came out before mkinitrd, and a new initrd is built when you install a kernel.

Either remove the kernel package and reinstall it (after yum has installed the new mkinitrd, of course) or just rebuild the initrd by hand.

That’s easy. What’s bad is there doesn’t appear to be a good communications channel to let people know about this.
